Homeless Man Charged with Burglarizing Trendy Promenade Cafe Three Times

By Jorge Casuso August 31, 2021 — County prosecutors filed burglary charges against a homeless man who allegedly broke into a trendy Promenade cafe three times in the course of one week. Jason Tyrone Strickland, 42, was arrested last Thursday at 3:28 a.m. inside CULT Restaurant, 1460 Third Street Promenade, by police dispatched to a burglary in progress, police said.

Jason Tyrone Strickland (Courtesy SMPD) Comments made by the caller “indicated the sensor to the front window was activated,” said Lt.

Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesman.

“The reporting party was able to see a male inside the establishment, through a live security surveillance feed, and recognized him as the same subject from a prior burglary,” he said. Responding officers found Strickland inside the restaurant and took him into custody, Flores said. They also found a metal bar “used to pry open a window.”

“The security surveillance footage showed Strickland attempting to access the cash register and safe.”

Detectives connected Strickland to two other burglaries that took place at CULT during the previous days, according to police. Security surveillance footage from August 20 shows Strickland “breaking into the restaurant and stealing cash and two bottles of wine,” Flores said. Two days later, officers dispatched to CULT to investigate a burglary alarm found Strickland inside the restaurant and arrested him.

“He was subsequently issued a citation due to California’s emergency zero bail order,” Flores said.

CULT, which opened in March, pays homage to Los Angeles, “its chefs, dishes, drinks and trends by mining it’s history for cult favorites,” according to its website.

Anyone with additional information concerning the incident or suspect should call Detective Amersfoort with the Criminal Investigation Division at 310-458-8944.
