Maritime security operation
Fiji Navy’s RFNS Savenaca was part of the regional Operation Island Chief last month that was critical in maintaining maritime security within the region. In a statement, the Fiji Navy said the annual operation was carried out for 10 days. The operation was co-ordinated by the Regional Fisheries Operations Centre based out of the Forum Fisheries Agency in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
“It involved 15 countries from the Pacific region,” the statement said. “During the operations over 30 boarding were conducted and over 260 contacts were sighted and investigated both by the 19 surface vessels and seven aerial surveillance assets which took part in the regional operation.” The statement said the RFNS Savenaca highlight of the operation was conducting vessel inspection in the high sea pocket between Fiji and Vanuatu.
“The RFNS Savenaca also conducted joint exercises and patrols with Royal Australian Navy ship the HMAS Glenelg during the operations.”
